THE WAR OF 1812 IN OAKWOOD

Led by Historian Michael Barrett

Troy men and businesses were instrumental in the prosecution of the war of 1812. Dozens of local men served in the military and were present at the major conflicts. Troy men took the first British flag captured during the war. Captain John Ellis Wool began his 52-year military career as one leader of General Stephen Van Rensselaer’s failed invasion of Canada. Local businessmen provided weaponry, equipment, clothing and foodstuffs to the troops, and the use of “Uncle Sam” has its origin here in the city.
